European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde acknowledged “the tectonic plates of geopolitics are shifting faster” and “we may see the world becoming more multipolar”, with the decline of US dollar hegemony, war in Ukraine, and rise of China.

Brazil’s Lula calls for end to dollar trade dominance

During his first trip to China, Brazil’s president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called on developing countries to work towards replacing the US dollar with their own currencies in international trade, lending his voice to Beijing’s efforts to end the greenback’s dominance of global commerce.

“Every night I ask myself why all countries have to base their trade on the dollar,” Lula said in an impassioned speech at the New Development Bank in Shanghai, known as the “Brics bank”.

“Why can’t we do trade based on our own currencies?” he added, drawing loud applause from the audience of Brazilian and Chinese dignitaries. “Who was it that decided that the dollar was the currency after the disappearance of the gold standard?”

During a visit by Xi Jinping to Moscow last month, Vladimir Putin pledged to adopt the renminbi for “payments between Russia and countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America”, in a bid to displace the dollar.

The Saudi government announced that it will start invoicing some oil exports to China in renminbi. Separately, France just did its first liquid natural gas sale in RMB and Brazil has embraced the currency for some of its trade with China.

The dollar’s proportion of global reserves has sunk from 72 per cent in 1999 to 59 per cent,(opens a new window) as central banks increasingly diversify their investment funds and discard currency pegs.

What is the Global South?

On April 7 2022, ninety-three countries voted to suspend Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council due to “grave concern at the ongoing human rights and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine”. Twenty-four countries voted with Russia against its suspension from the council, while 58 nations abstained .

Countries representing more than half of the world’s population declined to condemn Russia’s invasion at the UN , as the momentum toward Moscow’s international isolation seemed to have slowed.

One month earlier, 141 countries voted in favor of a UN resolution "deploring" Russia's aggression against Ukraine and demanding the immediate and complete withdrawal of all Russian forces from Ukrainian territory.

"Customers of Russian arms, oil and agricultural products have clear incentives to avoid Putin’s ire, but that's only part of the story, as many in the global south see the Western response as hypocritical ... At a time when the world seems to be breaking into geopolitical blocs — with the U.S. on one side and China and Russia on the other — many leaders would rather be on the sidelines than stuck in the middle -- historical "baggage" linked to Western imperialism doesn't help either." - Axios
